What are terpenes?
Terpenes are the aromatic compounds in plants: the smell of pine, citrus, or lavender comes from them. Cannabis contains many terpenes, and they are why each variety smells different. They are not unique to cannabis; they are found in fruits, flowers, and spices.
The "entourage effect"
There is the "entourage effect" hypothesis: the idea that cannabinoids and terpenes may act together and shape the experience more than each compound alone. This is an active area of study and the evidence is still limited, so it is best treated as a guide, not a certainty.
Common terpenes
Myrcene: earthy aroma, common in many varieties. Limonene: citrusy, sometimes linked to an uplifted mood. Pinene: pine. Linalool: floral, also found in lavender. Caryophyllene: woody and peppery, unique because it interacts with CB2 receptors. Knowing a product's terpene profile can help you choose by aroma and expected effect.
